"So how'd it go?"

Of course, that's the real question!
(Thanks to Josh Quigley for reminding me of that!)

In my opinion, it was great in a lot of ways. The audience seemed to really enjoy themselves - they laughed, they cried - and they got the main point of the show. The players were smart and funny and talented. The show sold out - they had to put extra chairs in the theatre for a total of 120 people.

But of course, as the writer, I could only see what needed to be rewritten.

One of the main problems is that we made a couple of cuts to Act 2 that took out a couple of lighter, upbeat songs - and we realized that what we were left with was a very long swath of depressing ballads with minor key overtones. I also wrote in a lot of reprises 'cause they're easier, and it just makes me look lazy. Which I am. So I have to come up with a little more new material.

But the biggest problem has always been the character of Julia's father - i've never really gotten into him as a person, just as an idea, and so it's always made his dialogue and his songs very difficult. I think that Mike and I have as many written-then-cut songs from his character as we do in the whole show. But thanks to the off-stage personality of the actor who played him (as well as a reminder from Bret about a Chaplain from our highschool and my own memories of a motivational speaker who visited my middle school) Mike and I been inspired in a new direction that I think will serve us very well.

So in short, the answer to that question is "It went well. I have to see where it goes from here."
